Hi. As unofficial communications assistant I'm concerned that a lot of members don't read my 'communications'
One reason for this could be that they are many and arrive like the proverbial buses, all at once.
I've looked on the Memberlist and note that there are many members registered but only a few have 'e-mail' against their name. When the 'boss' circulates messages by e-mail via the forum; does the message go to all members or just those who have 'e-mail' against their name?
If it goes to all members my general messages could go on the forum and only to those who don't use the forum.
That would leave my general circulation for important messages only, e.g. Notices to Mariners.

Hello Mike,
-
"does the message go to all members or just those who have 'e-mail' against their name?"
-
The "mass emails" as the forum software calls them go to all the registered users' email addresses that they used to first sign up.
"If it goes to all members my general messages could go on the forum and only to those who don't use the forum."
-
But, people regularly change their email address, but they may not have changed it on their "profile" above. In this case they will not be getting them even though they can sign on to the forum.
-
The new computer in the snug signs in as "snug computer" , so if that remains as homepage at the club, a few more people will be in touch there.
-
John Rushton and I are currently trying to set up a new forum ready for use if this one ever fails ( it is only a few pages, a bit of code and a database on a simple server somewhere)
-
cheers, D

Oh, that means I need to think again, perhaps start to send only important messages to my list anyway as there are a lot of members on the forum and if they are interested they'll make the effort to look on the forum.
I've forgotten how to make my Dreamweaver programme work, it asks for connecting info. each time I want to upload and I don't seem to fill the info. in correctly. I could put my reports on my section of the website, I was doing earlier in the year. Should get some help at Christmas. Damian's set up a connection to his website, which he doesn't use so that I can put info. on that but I can't make that work either.
I need to talk to Andy, Membership Secretary, for an up-to-date list of members, mine's mid-2007, hopefully he'll read this correspondence.
I think I'm right in wanting members to use the forum.

Re: Communications
It's two months since I started this subject. There have been 35 views but I guess some of those are David and myself. To say the least it's impact on the forum has been more than disappointing to me.
Have you all got your current e-mail address on your profile?
Have I got your current e-mail adddress on my list?
A few members use the forum and judging by their 'conversations' the forum is a good thing, even humourous at times - a much needed relief in these troubled times.
A few people read my e-mails, some even look forward to them but I'm getting more and more out of touch with what's actually going on so they are becomming less and less useful.
What would you all like - it's fine if you are happy and don't want anything.
My view is that the forum's the thing. People 'in the know' could keep us informed without having to come through me. At the moment I've conquered Dreamweaver so I can put dinghy matters on the website - the dinghy programme is already on and I'm attaching reports to the events as they occur - as well as the forum.
David's view: " ... The more it is used for open discussion, the better it is for general interest, so long as we don't criticise others and upset them? - That is where moderators come in, so long as they are fair and act quickly. and say what they have done. ... "
Happy New Year
