Summer cruise to Strangford Lough

Unread post by Lopud »

I have put the first week of the summer cruise plans onto the evry trail website. http://everytrail.com/my_trips.php
If you go to the above site and log in with username gsc and password sailing
On each trip page there is a comments box, you can either use that for comments and suggestions etc or use this forum.
I have only planned it to Strangford Lough Yacht club at the moment as I am interested in what people would like to do. A 2 mile walk along country lanes from the Yacht club will get you to a bus stop where you can catch buses to Belfast (2 changes required) or Bangor etc.
There is a regatta at the yacht club on the sat and sun so we will have to move from there but there are other clubs within very short sales (5mins upwards)
Once in Strangford Lough, apart from Portaferry, all the moorings and pontoons are owned by clubs and they are all very welcoming and are offering their facilities to us for no charge.
There is a deep water creek in the South West of the creek that looks interesting for our last night in the Lough with moorings and then maybe to Ardglass - Port St Mary - (Douglas ??) -Home, or North to Bangor - Ramsey - Home.
Suggestions please

I've circulated the message to our e-mail list. Looking forward to seeing how many members contribute and if it causes wider interest.

I forgot to add, that I need to know a rough idea of who is intending to go on the cruise so that I can ensure suitable moorings for everyone. If you could let me know length and draught of you boat please.
Thanks,
John

I was working in Belfast earlier this week so took the opportunity to nip down to Strangford Lough. I went to Down Cruising Club in Whiterock and met some of the members there. Their clubhouse and bar is an old light ship http://www.feuerschiffseite.de/SCHIFFE/ ... trelgb.htm
As Strangford Lough Yacht club will be having their Regatta the middle weekend of our cruise Down Cruising Club (which is only half a mile further North)would welcome us there (as long as we spend money at their bar!!!!!)
I took a couple of photos which are now on the every trail website to whet your appetites. There is a pontoon alongside the lightship we will be able to use as well as some moorings all within a few hundred yards of the lightship. There are hundreds of islands to choose from on which to have a cruise BBQ.

The last night in Strangford lough we will hopefully be at Quoille Yacht club, they can provide catering and wondered if we would be interested in having a buffet in their club house. Anyone got any views on this?

It's the Peel Traditional Boat Weekend at Peel from 1st to 3rd August.
http://www.peelsailingclub.com/tradboat/
Access to the harbour may be restricted for that weekend and round about?

Yes definately David, I am going to do some work on the summer cruise during the week with posters etc for the club house. I have been using the free version of evrsoft first page for a couple of years now for web page design, seems ok to me.

Just wondered what peoples views were for day 1. The forecast at the moment is showing F1-F2 Southerley or Westerley for both saturday and sunday, should we head for Port St Mary instead of Ramsey and then hopefully get across to Strangford Sunday if the forecast holds, or would people prefer a rest in IOM or head to Ramsey as originally planned then to Peel on Sunday. My thinking behind this is that the objective is to get to Strangford, which has sheltered waters so once their we can make new plans for the rest of the fortnight as the weather permits us, rather than be being stuck on IOM. Freelancer set off today bound for Douglas so that he is in the middle of which ever destination on IOM we choose.

I'm not going but I've heard several skippers around the Club talking about Port St. Mary as being the best initial destination?
