New traffic seperation scheme

Unread post by kerrygirl »

I don't know if anyone else saw it but a couple of months ago there was notification of a new traffic seperation scheme in Liverpool Bay due to come into force this month, I think. While I was just doing some chart corrections for our own cruise to Scotland I saw this amendment, "New Traffic Seperation Scheme centred on 53* 27'.05N 3* 37'.5W " I couldn't download the accompanying block correction but the co-ordinates put it approx. West of the Hamilton rig/Douglas oil field, which means the family cruise to Wales will have to cross it. Hope this information averts some nasty fines!
Regards, Brian (Triagos).

This is very interesting information and thanks for the head up advice. I have a silly question as I have not come accross the "Fines" anywhere in my training and learning so far, so can you be fined at sea and by who? My understanding was the insurance people would decide who was wrong based on the col' regs if an incident occurred.

The reason for asking is when we sailed to Whithaven and sailed near the wind farm near to lighting knoll I was buzzed by a rib which was very official looking, they seemed to appear from knowwhere powering from the distance directly at us then turned waved and moved on.

I thought I was escaping the police state coming to sailing, next there will be speed cameras??

Keep these discussions going on the forum, they help the less experienced and thanks.

Hi John,My comment about fines isn't based on personal experience, rather on what I've read and been told. As I understand it, if you are observed visually or by radar not obeying the TS rules,ie using the wrong lane or not crossing at right angles you can be liable to heavy fines. This is certainly the case in places like the Dover Straits. How far the Coast Guard would take it in quieter waters, I don't know. Better safe than sorry! I don't think the insurers have any say in these matters, it is down to the maritime authorities, that is usually the Coast Guard, and while I agree that sailing is a pleasure pastime it sometimes takes place in areas where,if the wrong move is made, the consequences can be disasterous, hence the need for policing (however distasteful).

Hi Dave , yes that's the one but I still can't get the block correction. I 'm not too bothered at the moment as we'll be going the other way. I'm more bothered about wayward red trawlers! :?

Thanks, John,

Chris has plotted it on the chart and it has confirmed my decision to go to the west of the " ODI " storage installation.

A direct line between Shell wharfe buoy and conwy takes you to the east of ODI and near the new zone.

The other "area to be avoided" on that page seems to be in the middle of the Lake District ??

Togg is planning to Thurs Midday for Port Penrhyn.

Drumlin, freelancer and Florence are off to Moelfre on thurs via Piel to meet the fleet at Conwy on Sat

there are various cars going down with reluctant crew people in them if anyone needs a lift.

If all goes to plan, our car and crew will be coming back to Glasson early Fri am

cheers, David
