Piel Trips - dates for the diary
Piel Trips - dates for the diary
Hello Sailors !
There are a few week-end sailing opportunities left this season (other than the Club Regatta!) which may be worth a run / race to Piel.
30 August HW 14:35 8.7m
13 Sept HW 14:45 9.2m
27 Sept HW 13:36 9.2m
Hopefully we can hold a 'Sea 3' race on one of these dates.
There's also a MBSA regatta on Sunday 21 Sept hosted by the Roa Island club. It coincides with a national 'Bart's Bash' event, hoping to get into the Guinness Book of Records through number of clubs and sailors participating - and raise some money for Bart's fund.
More info as and when I get it.
Regards
Roger

Re: Piel Trips - dates for the diary
Hi Roger. Do you know if any boats are planning to go to Piel this coming weekend? Suzi will be up for it -weather permitting.
Re: Piel Trips - dates for the diary
Chablis is planning to go to piel Duncan, so a cruise in company would be great.
Re: Piel Trips - dates for the diary
Be there or be square- hopefully!
Re: Piel Trips - dates for the diary
Evening folk,
Maybe too late, but I think my boat is finally ready, and was wondering about tagging onto this tomorrow- partly to have my 1st sail on Lydia as one in company, but I don't know the logistics and methods that are involved in this trip. RIght now she's in Glasson Basin, and was going to get her out of there tomorrow, which would be the usual restricted gate opening- 45m pre HW if I remember right.
Would folk be launching and leaving pre HW, or around that time?
How long is the sail for most?
Is it tidally restricted at Piel? (Got chart on table in front of me, but not had a good chance to study yet- crazy busy sorting the boat!).
Is comms pre planned between folk?
Is there food at the pub in Piel?
Are moorings available?
Oh, so many questions...
All the best, Jem.

Re: Piel Trips - dates for the diary
Hi Jem, Suzi usually takes around 4 to 5 hours from leaving her mooring to arriving at Piel . We aim to leave just before or on hw. After clearing Lune 1 west cardinal buoy we then head for walney light if possible and on that heading we should have at least 1.5 metres under the keel on the shallowest part of Mort Bank after 4 hours. Of course thats as the crow flies and we could be forced to tack further out or in. The channel is open on all states of the tide and you will float on any of the moorings except close in to the castle. Food at the pub. Give us a call when you leave and we,ll find a working channel. This is all weather dependant. My crew has just mentioned the howling wind outside- she,s sensitive like that!
Re: Piel Trips - dates for the diary
wise words Duncan, however the forcast is nw goingsw 4 to 5 occ 6 easing3to 4 later. ideal for suzi . lets see what tomorrow brings .all things being well it will be ideal conditions and the more the merrier.
Re: Piel Trips - dates for the diary
Thanks Duncan and Ian.
We'll go down to Lydia later and see if it looks doable for us. If we decide to go for it, I'll try to contact folk... What's best, a call to the club, or is there a radio channel the club usually uses?
Uh-oh, just realised I've not sorted the VHF licence for the boat (assuming still needs to be done).
I also had a look at the pub website: seems they stop food at 7pm, so assuming depart HW, doesn't look time enough to get fed there.

Re: Piel Trips - dates for the diary
In case you see this, I think potential F6 is a bit much for our shakedown being a new boat to us, and new waters (new beyond the light, and not on a humongous commercial vessel, that is...). So it's likely just going to be get out of marina and onto mooring, with a small chance of a pootle to the river entrance and back to get the sails up.
Got the VHF licence (for me, not vessel now I understand) sorted online.
Have a great trip folks- we'll join the jaunt next year!

Re: Piel Trips - dates for the diary
Hi Jem, Got to the club with the wind picking up and being over tide we decided not to go. Sitting here back in Withnell with the rain lashing down i can,t say i,m sorry!
We,ll look at it tomorrow and if it seems favourable we may go then. Ian has gone. We had a ride to Overton and saw Chablis going down the channel with an interesting heel!

Re: Piel Trips - dates for the diary
Well, got to the boat and had missed the inner gate, only to find the tender outboard wasn't working right, so wouldn't have made it anyway also. Hope Chablis had a good trip, and yourself if you go tomorrow Duncan.
We won't be down tomorrow though I'll be trying to escape the marina as soon as I get the small outboard sorted (at Bridgehouse now). At least gives me a chance to be sure she is ready, not that I'll get much in this season now.

Ref 21 September - message from Mark Brammer MBSA:
Hello,
Just a reminder that MBSA 2 incorporating Bart’s Bash will be on 21st September.
Bart’s bash is the biggest sailing event in the world to commemorate Andrew(Bart) Simpson who died during the warm up to the Americas cup and to raise funds for the sailing foundation formed after his tragic death.
Look on www.bartsbash.co.uk to see what MBSA is going to be part of (weather permitting)
The sailing instructions are being prepared and it will follow usual MBSA pattern, starts 10:50 for multihulls 11:00 for monohulls.
Kind Regards
Mark
