There were some pretty dayboats on the river today. Does anyone know what class these two are?
Dayboats
Re: Dayboats
The boat with the blue sail is I think, a Lune Whammel.
Re: Dayboats
The Lune Whammel has been sailed within the estuary for a good number of years, I understand the present owner is a local retired gentleman. Both him and his wife sail most most months of the year, We frequently exchange friendly waves, have done so for over twenty or more years, not once, have I seen the use of an ENGINE.They have a great knowledge of the Lune.
Oh, I must add------the boat is over 100 years old !
The second boat in question, I think is owned by a lady from Sunderland point, also built by a local boat builder from Sunderland Point, The lady is the daughter of the boat builder, his name was Bailey. There are a number of these lovely boats around the locality.

Re: Dayboats
The whammel (green, with blue sail) is owned by Peter Gilchrist, who lives at Dolphin House on Sunderland Point and has been in their family since it was launched! When he came to give the Club a talk and show of Magic lantern slides about the Point, one of the images he showed, was the family 'ceremony' launching the boat!
Ivan - I think the boat builder you mention was Bill Bailiff, from Overton - ours is one of his. I don't know whether the one in the image is or not, though - I know he took mouldings from original locally built boats - don't know whether he built in wood or not.
There is a Facebook Group 'Friends of Sunderland Point' and I'm sure someone on there would know though - Katie Bailiff is a member, so would possibly be able to help

Hi Val,
Yes, you are 100% correct, I was unaware the lady mentioned was a member !
Thank you for your information.
Ivan.
