You did try banning @gmail.com addresses before. It doesn't affect existing users (mine is a gmail address), but I don't think it materially affected the number of unwanted registrations.
Suggestion: allow only restricted user names, eg.
<given name><family name><GSC number>.
Then John Smith number 998 would only be recognized as a registered user as
JohnSmith998
If a family member, a son also called John Smith could register as
JohnSmithJunior998.
We would delete any registrations not conforming to this pattern.

Hi John
I did not ban the gmail.com addresses just all the gmail ones apart from .com so gmail.net gmail.org and so on, think your idea is a good one but without the member list i would not know a good one from a bad one
if i had the member list it wouldn't matter about the gmail ban
I *think* from what i have read phpbb version 3 gives us more can control over this but it would be more work getting it there and the current version does appear to be ok apart from the registration issue?
cheers

Hi Derek,
I was thinking about David's banning @gmail.com a long time ago. You're right of course about not knowing good from bad names if we followed my suggestion, but I should have thought that the number of non-legitimate registrations conforming to the pattern would be v. small.
David might have views about changing to v3.

not sure abot ban
been thinking about this whilst I have been away, probably why the numbers david has banned have gone up
as I have not been doing my quota. Think Johns suggestion works or we could get membership number or something in the interests field.
I do think though the only way to fix this is by prepopulating the forum with users, giving them their user name and password and then stop new registrations .... if we can

I would not like to restrict the forum to members only. quite a few potential members join the forum before they join the club

Seeing the forum is getting used quite a lot now, I wouldn't like to mess it up, so what about having a backup forum using phpbb3 on the swinranger web space ( under - used at present, also the club is now paying for it )
-
We could pre - populate it with current users permission, just trying it with the three of us and our current email adresses for a start, in case of cookie conflicts,
-
then building it up over a period, giving them all the same password initially so we could get their profiles same as they are now? We could also set up any new ones this way, using Mike's email list? Warn them before we do it, of course.

We could ask that non-members e-mail one of us if they wished to register, and then assign them a temporary user name; if necessary we could change this when/if they join the club.I would not like to restrict the forum to members only. quite a few potential members join the forum before they join the club
