The Merlo is now apparently working correctly again.
Barnfields will visit to do a diagnostic check but in the meantime please speak to Gilly before use because the issue may be down to driver error.....

Still to be proven but it is suspected that the software requires a certain number of revs to be happy before setting off. As I mentioned, please speak to Dave before using because he's the liaison with Barnfields at the moment.
engine speed issue we believe is sorted, back to the original problem of randomly will not select gears and over-ride has to be used, its the same problem its always had but is happening more frequently.
Thanks John and mechanics for tackling the daunting Merlo electrics, it sounds like they are getting nearer to pinpointing the problem - it is probably a tiny device on top of the injector pump which monitors the throttle position and sends a signal to the hydrostatic drive part of the ECU. If the computer doesn't get the signal it wants, it goes into "limp" mode which, on the Merlo, means no drive without switching the override switch - a viable option for an experienced driver, not not safe for a occasional user. Lets hope that the replacement will sort it. David
