Riverdance

Unread post by davidb »

-
It appears that Riverdance will probably be scrapped after she is refloated.

-
She has suffered damage to internal framing to to the angle she is resting at on the hard sand.
-
I think the salvors have been cutting away part of the deck to crane out the trailers.
-
It turns out that a webcam has been watching the site all the time:

From the MCA today:
-
he Ro Ro ferry 6,041 ton `Riverdance still remains firmly aground on the North Shore at Blackpool. The vessel still remains in a precarious position. Currently the vessel is maintaining a significant list to starboard. The main cargo deck, lower hold, engine room and steering gear room are currently interconnected and therefore flood with the tide and the watertight integrity of the hull is subject to further investigation by salvors.

The salvage control unit, chaired by Hugh Shaw, the Secretary of States Representative in Maritime Salvage and Intervention (SOSREP) recently reported that over the past weekend all bunker fuels have been successfully removed from the most vulnerable tanks. Operations will now concentrate on stabilising the vessel by making the hull watertight and transferring water ballast to reduce the list. The severe list has made the access to the double bottom tanks much easier and safer than before.

Work continues on the further removal of a number of trailers from the main deck, but efforts are being hampered by the tide levels at low water which is restricting the safe working time on scene. The Environment Group continues to monitor and risk assess the situation and are satisfied with the progress being made to date.

Additional security staff remain in place to cover the low water periods supported by HM Coastguard personnel and vehicles when the vessel presents dangers to onlookers who stray too close the site.

An outline traffic management plan is being discussed between Lancashire Police and the local authorities for the refloating operation which, due to ongoing work on board the vessel, will not take place for at least the next two weeks. A number of road closures and restrictions will be put in place at that time and the plan will be implemented for the period covering the refloat.

Tony Redding, from Seatruck Ferries, which operates the Riverdance, explained what would happen.

He said: "The main part of the operation is moving water inside the ships.

"Water in ballast tanks in the hold will be pumped from starboard to port.

"At the same time we have four containers on the port side, each weighing 20 tonnes.

"They will help to pull the ship upright.

Hoped

"A trench has been dug to give Riverdance room to move and space in which to rest when she is upright.

"Welders have made the decks watertight, to give us the best possible chance of getting her level.

Seatruck and salvage firm Smit had hoped to carry out the righting operation at high tide tomorrow.

However, weather could now scupper that plan.

-

"If the weather is bad then the operation could be put back. It is just a case of wait and see."

Even if the ship is raised to an upright position, she is likely to remain on the sands for several weeks.

Mr Redding said: "Once she is righted there will be quite a significant amount of work to be done before she can be towed off the beach."

Riverdance has attracted huge numbers of visitors since she ran aground at Anchorsholme at the end of January.

The ship was en route from Warrenpoint in Northern Ireland to Heysham when she was struck by a freak wave.

She has developed a list in excess of 90 degrees since grounding on the sands.

Storm Damage

Unread post by davidb »

NEW PLAN FOR RIVERDANCE REMOVAL TO BE PRESENTED NEXT WEEK

Late Tuesday and early Wednesday morning the stranded Ro-Ro ferry `Riverdance was hit by 78 knot winds, and as a consequence sustained heavy damage resulting in a 100 degree list. She is also partly sinking into the soft and shifting sand locally.

Plans to reduce the list using internal buoyancy and tidal effects have now been abandoned. Salvors are assessing the situation and are in discussion with the owners and insurers of the vessel.

A revised outline plan containing the options for the removal of the vessel will now be presented to Hugh Shaw, the Secretary of States Representative for Maritime Salvage and Intervention, (SOSREP) for his consideration early next week.

Hugh Shaw said

The owners legal representatives have also had a preliminary discussion with him and have given their reassurance that their objective of removing the vessel in an environmentally friendly and timely manner remains paramount.

I look forward to receiving a revised outline plan with options early next week for my consideration.

In the interim the salvors will make every effort to maintain the integrity of the vessel. A full assessment of the damage is still ongoing. Fortunately, and as a consequence of the earlier bunker removal there have been no reports of pollution from the vessel.

Local Paper (the Gazette) ran the headline on Friday night of ."LOST" ....The ro Ro Ferry Riverdance has been declaired a "Total Loss" And will be cut up on the beach at Cleveleys.

Did anyone notice on Sat Night Riverdance's sister ship "Moondance" passed close by the wreck & sounded her horn.
