Viking day

Unread post by Derek B »

Went on my first Viking day on Saturday, started really well, even dressed for the part. got to golden ball, and was ask to help someone get to shore so I went back out to them, and then disaster ! I lost my prop off my engine, started to drift with the tide, lucky I had my Oars, but to my disappointment not a single person came to my aid EVEN after a guy watching from the shore told somebody I was having problems ( the person who he told, don't know who it was, just shrugged their shoulders as if to say NOT MY PROBLEM ) so all in all put a real dampener on the day. :(
BUT a BIG "THANK YOU " to Gilly for towing me back

Whaaat? I don't believe it.

Sorry I don't know who you are Derek - but I do know that if any of us had known that you had a problem, whoever you were, we would have helped. I take it that you did get to the shore by rowing? I don't suppose that the prop would be found even at low water, even if you got chance to mark the spot (GPS or something). Or is this just a little plastic one off an outboard that we are talking about, and your real gripe is the lack of help?

Such a shame you had a day out with GSC spoilt. Honestly, people do fall over themselves to look after each other all the time... I could give loads of examples. So don't let this put you off. I really hadn't heard about this till I saw it on the forum, and i didn't hear anyone talking about it when we got back- so I really think it was not down to people being unhelpful, but that they simply didn't know about your problem. Thank goodness Gilly took you under his wing in the end.

Yours Chris Booth

I was also at the Golden ball on Sat and didn't know anything about this until now. I wonder if the person told about your problem was not one of our club members.

On our way back I went across to a speed boat that had drifted onto the lee shore across from the pub ( he had his prop tilted up in the shallow water with a skier still attached to his line) to ask if he was OK or needed a tow (he was allright).

Derek,I was there with my son (In a white fb dinghy with outboard) and wasn,t aware that you had a problem. I think i can speak for all club members when i say that we have "all been there" and no one would knowingly abandon anyone. Anyway next time we are at the club, please come and introduce yourself. My boat is Suzi so if you see me there just come up for a chat.

You should have fired a rocket flare at Snatchems Derek, that would have woke em up.
I suppose if they saw you rowing OK they assumed you were alright.
I spent most of my money on Booze, Women and Boats. The rest I wasted.

Hi Derek,
Glad you will be joining us next time.
In the meantime, what about a week on Sat (5th July) Brew for the Crew in aid of lifeboats.
You don't even need to dress up - we do. Some of us women that is, dress up as waitresses and serve home made cakes and tea to paying GSC members, guests and local village people. We also have a very good bric a brac stall.
2-4pm, pass it on.

Ooops, little mistake in my post.
Brew for Crew IS 5TH JULY..... But of course that is two weeks on Sat, not a week on Sat. I'm wishing my life away saying things like that.
