Demolition of the White Container

Unread post by davidb »

NOTICEBOARD COPY
30TH September 2013.

Dear Members,

As many of you will be aware the White Container on the Club site is in a poor state of repair. Its continued deterioration has led the Committee to take the decision to demolish and remove it as its is deemed to be a hazard.
There appears to be no great demand for this facility any more and it is very much used as a dumping ground for a range of unused items and discarded rubbish. In preparation for its demolition members are requested to remove any personal items they may be storing in there. This should be completed by the end of November when a date will be set for pulling it down. Any items not removed by this deadline will be deemed as not required and disposed of.
What, if anything will replace it will be determined by reasonable demand and a demonstrable need. However this will not be an immediate replacement so the container needs to be fully emptied.

Thank you for your co-operation with this task

Tony Lamb
On behalf of the Committee.

I personally think it is handy to have some sort of storage for items that you may need but don't want to carry on the boat all the time. Saves it getting nicked if left around the boat. Also keeps the park tidier. I have a sprayhood in there so if the committee has decided it's going I suppose I'd better remove it

I also think having some indoor storage space available to members is a good facility at a sailing club.
I am disappointed that a decision to demolish the container as been made without a suitable replacement being available. Would it not have been better to get some feedback from the members first, and then make a decision to replace or not?

Just for the record I have nothing in the container at the moment but I have found it very useful in the past. painting a mast and storing racing mark buoys, chain etc.

We need a secure storage/working place for members general use.

There are lots of items hanging around the gents changing room that could be stored somewhere to free up space for people actually using the changing rooms. In the past we used to bundle up the gear and dump it in the garage but there's no room in the garage now.

I was asked what I thought about the white containers removal and did say I thought it was good for the club to have somewhere for members to store sailing items short term at the club (I do not have anything in there) and I also think it should be replaced.

I'm in agreement with the disposal of the white container because it is falling apart and not secure. Looking back now I think it was probably only given to us because it will be very expensive to 'recycle'.

Perhaps someone may have a suggestion? A steel container will probably be too expensive.

Hi All,
Yes - it's been good to trigger the debate - which was mirrored at the last Committee meeting. At the moment the white container is mainly full of stuff that hasn't moved for a while.
A replacement has been proposed and has not been ruled out, subject to there being a confirmed requirement. The cost of a 40' steel secure container would be around £2000 - plus the difficulties/costs of positioning it in the current location, which may need a temporary surface to get it there. And we need to properly dispose of the existing one which contains nasty stuff -at some additional cost.
So before the club commits to a circa £2000+ spend - the key question is 'Do we really need it ?' The club also needs a workshop area away from the 'garage' which could remove that aspect from this Container debate.

Cheers

The present White Container has served us well over many years, now-----most probably a health hazard ! A few years ago, during a work party, I cleared and cleaned it out.I suspect since then it's become a haven for vermin, due to the "ope all hours"deteriated, dangerous doors syndrome----quite frightening---even to look at !
However, a replacement facility is seriously needed, as mentioned in other notes on this matter. I do hope we can reach a suitable conclusion, quickly.

Ivan,
I reckon the exercise to clear the container before demolition, as requested by the Committee, will provide evidence as to whether a direct replacement is 'seriously needed'.
Personaly I'd go for a 20' container and a covered work shop area. But there may be people out there who need 40' ...

If we go the container way it needs to be least 40'. There was a plan to put a lean-to next to the new garage and keep the old garage for storing outboards, and the patrol boat . As a workshop the lean-to wouldn't be very friendly in our weather conditions. When it's wet you can move the patrol boat out, it's designed to get wet, and work in that space, which I've done once or twice.

Glasson used to welcome people who maintained/modified/ even fitted out their own boats and was happy at personal work being done on site by members. Is that no longer the case?

If I could have one wish from the Management Committee it would be to extend the top portion of the apron seawards. I keep meaning to make a proposal but don't seem to get round to it. It just needs to take the apron around 2 metres beyond the water drain outlet and extend only 5 metres towards the river - removes the 'ditch' that seriously impedes launching and recovery. This would seriously help dinghy recover on spring tides, keep dinghies out of the way of cruisers launching and recovering and as most sailing etc. is done on spring tides ...

Another thought. When I worked on my mast it was good because of the dry but all the stored items made it hard working on it, at time it was hazardous. When I sanded the mast down everything was covered in dust. It's not really suitable to use as a workshop.
One could say it had become a dumping ground. I don't know if it is used now but the fact that it has been insecure for years has made it unattractive.
Do we need a cycle store?

Another thought:

Perhaps the mast with a sail, and probably boom, belong to an old wooden boat which was broken up some time ago. It belonged to a man who had a caravan on the Marina caravan park. I think he lotst his job or became ill or some form of a crisis. He helped a lot when we concreted the apron?

I keep a spare wheel in the container for Periwinkle's launching trolley just in case of an emergency. I suppose I could keep this by the trolley but things can soon start to get untidy just leaving things lying around. Paul
Periwinkle is a Hurley 22 and is moored on the far side of the River Lune.

If we do replace the container why not make provision to move the outboard storage into it.
As it is at present there is now no room for anymore outboards,
It is very difficult retrieving / storing your outboard when the garage is so full.

Regarding the building of an outdoor workshop. A few years ago I volunteered to build a workshop on the side of the old garage. Unfortunately due to two of the team of four having health problems it was put back. I have spoken to our commodore and the original team and we hope to have a outdoor work area soon.
Regarding the white container. I think the reason for it being full of junk is because it hasn't been cleared out for years. If the storage area was secure and tidy maybe it would be used more. I'm sure some of our members who have little space at home would find it useful, but then I could be wrong. It's up to the members to voice their opinion on this to see if there is a need.
