Regatta - Prizes v Entry Fees
Regatta - Prizes v Entry Fees
Lorna, Vice-Commodore, Regatta Organiser, is going to raise the question of prizes at the next committee meeting but unfortunately that's not till the 18th August.
We have trophies for all the catergories of racing but these must be handed back, engraved, before the next regatta. There have been no other prizes with the exception of the jubilee year.
Up until a few years ago we used to charge an entry fee but recently, to encourage entrants, we've not asked for an entry fee but this has meant that we have not given prizes.
I wonder if all those intending to take part would be willing to pay an entry fee? A debating point - £5 per helm taking part and £3 per crew?

Re: Regatta - Prizes v Entry Fees
I'm not a racing man myself Michael, but if I was I think I'd be doing it for the joy of competing and not for the possibility of winning a prize. Just my thoughts.

Not really an idea I was just reflecting what we used to do and what other clubs do but thanks for your responses.
On reflection it's not really reasonable to expect people to contribute to prizes most of us have no real chance of winning.
When I was Rear Commodore Racing I got whisky glasses etched with the Club logo for the first three. Charity events give you a medal for taking part, just some kind of momento.
I agree with Jim it's just the joy of taking part with each other, doing something as a group. I think if we encourage members to win it will spoil the atmosphere because most of us have no chance of winning but we can take part, improve our sailing skills and enjoy our time on the water.

Re: Regatta - Prizes v Entry Fees
Long gone are the dark days when GSC didn't have a tanner to scratch its backside with. We will NOT be asking for entry fees for members to enter club events. As far as prizes are concerned if anyone feels that this is a good idea then please do not hesitate to put your Ideas in the suggestion box or contact Lorna(who is the arbiter in all things Regatta) through the Hon Sec, he will immediately pass them on to her. I know that she will view all suggestions and ideas in her usual fair and measured way.

The last time I won anything was on the all press at the fair when I was around five years old and I cannot see that improving! But hey, whatever the majority decides will be OK by me

CHEERS OR CLAP.
MICHAEL is consistently driving forward our dinghy fleet, I'm certain we all agree.
He's following correct procedure in club racing, usually with clubs of large dinghy fleets, for participants to pay a fee for entering a regatta
We have a choice, we either pay a small fee, possibly involving a completely useless Bonus Bargain from tthe Pound Shop, or,
Pay nothing and settle for CHEERS AND A CLAP !
OOPS! HAVING JUST digested my copy, think I will be content with CHEERS, forget the CLAP !

Hi Ivan
because we are not having entry fees does not mean we can't have prizes (I was thinking more of B&M Bargains)
. I hope the clap or should I have said the clapping improves!!
