In the past, ICC courses have been run at our Club.

Yesterday someone asked me if there are any planned for this winter.

I think Alan Fleetwood might have been the last person to organise a course, but I might be wrong.

if we can get a list of at least 6 names together, i'm sure we shall be able to do something about it.

The committee are very happy for the clubhouse to be used for this purpose.

Hi Mick,

I think the course cost depends on the instructor and the numbers attending.

There is a charge for the certificate as well, but if you join the RYA, it used to be free.

I might be interested - put me down provisionally, although all depends on particulars.
Just checked the RYA website, it says the ICC itself is £40 for non-members, free for "qualifying members".

When I did it about 7 years ago, I was told that the qualification doesn't expire, but I believe the certificate expires after 5 years. As we still haven't sailed abroad I still haven't got the ticket. I shall do it again if necessary

However, the course is well worth doing because there is a practical test and it gives you practice in close - quarters sailing and commanding a small crew.

Perhaps the best ( and cheapest ) course I have ever done, really enjoyed it, despite the weather.

The most memorable bit was steaming through the pontoons towards the dead end and the prop shaft broke when we came to put it in reverse.

The guy who lived and worked on the prawner ( what became of him? ) saved the day with his local knowledge and we ran aground on a soft bit of bank, no harm done. we were on a Macwester like Billy Ruffian.

Jack Seed ran the course and he's registered the Club as his 'school' or something like that. I think Jim Cruise used to be in touch with him.

The last examination for the ICC qualification run at GSC was a few years ago, the examiner was Jack Seed who has now retired as a sailing instructor and is a member of our club. I spoke to Jack over the weekend and he is willing to examine another batch of candidates. Intending candidates should first familiarise themselves with the requirements for the qualification which can be found in the RYA ICC Handbook which can be bought direct from the RYA or from Amazon. The examination consists of theoretical and practical tests: on previous occasions we used the Snug for the theory and a member's boat on the marina basin for the practical - last time it was Ian Atkinson's Orla. It would be best if all the interested people could organise themselves together as a 'batch' of candidates aiming to take the exams together, probably in late Winter/early Spring next year. There is an option, when taking the theoretical part of the test, to be examined on the CEVNI regulations which, if passed,adds a CEVNI endorsement to the ICC and permits the holder to navigate the inland waterways of Europe.

If going in for this qualification it is probably best to join the RYA as an individual as their charge for issuing a certificate to a non-member is similar to their annual membership subscription. Also, if one is a member, the RYA will renew the certificate every five years for free (no re-tests needed).

Just a thought,If you have the day skipper qualification you can have the icc without doing the course, just a fee required. I got mine that way and had the cevni endorsement as well by doing the test online

That's correct,if you have Day Skipper theory and practical you can apply for the ICC without taking further examinations, unless you want the CEVNI endorsement for which you still need to take an exam. If you only have Day Skipper theory it will be cheaper to do the whole ICC via the club.

Is anything moving on the ICC course? There seems to be no input since Jim Cruise 09/10/11.

I would like to know a more specific date when this is going to happen, as 'late winter/early spring' is not accurate enough for me, as I need to book the time off work, especially as I have agreed for my boat to be used in the exam.

Sorry for the nudge, any further information would be greatly appreciated.

Also should we contact Jack Seed? If so, can we have his details?

You shouldn't need to book time off work for the exams because they can take place on any date that you and your fellow candidates agree with Jack Seed. We aren't running courses, all you need to pass the exams can be found in the RYA's ICC Handbook, supplemented if necessary by a bit of private practice. You definitely need the handbook and also the CEVNI booklet if you're doing the inland waterways part. These are all available from the RYA or Amazon. There is a new issue of the ICC handbook just coming out. Jack Seed's phone no should be on the register of members in the lobby, if not the Membership Secretary Andy Macnab will know it. I spoke to Jack a few weeks ago and he said he would do the exams. You may have seen him at the club - he sails a bright yellow inflatable sailing dinghy so is fairly unmistakeable.

I've spoken to Jack Seed and he informs me that unfortunately my boat is too big for the manouvres in the basin. (He must have seen Slippers sailing in the marina!) So we need a smaller boat. Any offers??

Also he would preferably like 6 people in total. 3 in each practical test.

So far we have Slippers, Big John, Mick Bull, Pav and Myself so 1 more would be good and we still need a smaller boat for us to use.

Any suggestions?

Thanks for that! Mick Bull as allso said we can wreck sorry use his. According to Jack Seed he would like to do two sesions with three in each sesion so not to crowded. Also Martin has said he would like to join the coarse so thats six if everbody is still on for it.
I will ask Jack for an update.

What sort of a vessel do we need? I've got my Ingria, a 21ft trailer sailor, but she's, well how do I put it, not that advanced. All bits in pieces are in place and she's sailable, though.

Just got off the phone with Jack Seed, he would like for us all to meet in the snug on sat 19th Nov 19-30 he wants to run us through the coarse and see if we need to brush up (learn) the theory side of things.
Can you reply either on the forum or pm me as to, if the date and time are OK and i will let him know.
