St George's Quay

What on earth happened here? Did the building subside whilst under construction? Did the random stone one on the left get built after to help support the slanted one?

Hi David,
Yes, that's the story I have heard. It subsided as the house was being built. When the quay was built in the 1700s they built the wall in the middle of the river on bedrock and back filled up to the meadow which was probably marshy river bank ish. That produced lots of new land for building, BUT as it dried out it settled.
Don't mention that Lancaster was big in the 'Triangular' trade at the time or people will want it pulled down.

Regards to all

Roger
