A £100 tax on Yachts?
The level of revenue that supports Trinity House (responsible for lighthouses and marine navigation aids) has fallen recently and a deficit is being operated.
The government via the Depart of Transport has commissioned consultants to investigate methods to save money and generate more income.
One of the recommendations is a tax of £100 per boat for pleasure boats that travel outside harbour limits.
It goes without saying that the implementation of such a tax has enormous implications for yacht owners as it would result in compulsory registration of yachts, and once that happens the doors become open to all manner of government involvement.
The RYA is actively monitoring the situation and lobbying against such a tax. Their article can be seen here http://www.rya.org.uk/newsevents/enewsl ... aign=May10.
The DfT website page is http://www.dft.gov.uk/pgr/shippingports ... arineaids/ and the report can be download http://www.dft.gov.uk/pgr/shippingports ... report.pdf. The £100 recommendation is on page 236
